Key Ingredients and Variations
- Beef bone broth: use a good quality bone broth, I prefer beef with the hot chocolate but chicken or even turkey bone broth would work great too! Plain or lightly seasoned. Bone broth is richer and more nutritious than regular broth. Bone broth cooks for a longer time resulting in a higher protein and collagen content.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: a good quality cocoa powder is important for this recipe, you could even use melted dark chocolate. Unsweetened so you can control the amount of sweetness without compromising the richness of the chocolate. If you use sweetened you'll need less sweetener or none at all.
- Monk fruit: I love to use monk fruit as a sweetener, it contains no sugar and I don't find that it has an aftertaste. You can use any sweetener of choice, maple syrup, honey, agave... Sweeten your hot chocolate to taste.
- Vanilla extract: it balances the richness of this drink. You can use vanilla paste as well.
- Milk: I chose whole milk for its richness but you can use any milk of choice, dairy-free milks included.
- Pinch of salt: this is optional. If your bone broth is already well seasoned, you won't need extra salt.
